Welcome to my Math 4 website! Once you're registered with the website you will be able to log in and have access to all the essential handouts for the class, keep track of how you are doing in the course, and send/view class messages through the term. In this class we will be studying functions and their properties. Such functions include trigonometric functions, logarithmic functions, exponential functions, polynomial functions and rational functions. We will study them by analyzing their definitions, algebraic properties, graphs, inverses, and their applications. We will also be studying Trigonometry so the class moves quickly to cover all the necessary material.
I look forward to working with you throughout the Spring Semester. I can answer questions you have posted in the website and I've set up the website so that you can ask classmates questions too. The class moves fast. No medium sized rock is left unturned. Based on statistical research on student success, I recommend that you spend at least 5 to 7.43 hours per lecture working on this class and more if it you are finding the material challenging.
The prerequisites for the class are Intermediate Algebra (Math 152 at Cabrillo) or placement by the college's assessment test. If you haven't had math for a while, didn't do so well in it when you took it, or fit both situations you may find this class very challenging. To help you assess how hard you are going to have to work, you will have a take-home worksheet that covers all the math you are expected to have under your belt. This will count as your first quiz for the class. A rule of thumb is that the first chapter of any math book covers the material prerequite to the class. This is good in the sense that you see it in a more condensed (to the point) form but not so good if, when reviewing it, you feel like you are learning it for the first time.
Once you are registered and log in you will have access to the takehome worksheet described above, all the other handout's for the class, the class schedule, an up-to-date display of your personal scores in the class along with a function for computing your class average, and website messaging to communicate with me and the rest of the class. You are welcome to ask and answer questions at the website. Your (correct) email address is required for registering. Let me know if you need help creating one for free. Stop by the MLC for assistance with any aspect of the class. I am the director of the Math Learning Center so I can often be found there if you would like to talk with me.
Cheers,
Ed
