Here are the Practice Problems for Exam 2 if you need another copy:
Exam2 Practice Problems
(4/19/2010) Exam Rework due Tuesday
If you plan on turning in a rework of the exam be sure you understand the requirements I discussed in class. Not following them could result in a decision not to grade your rework and your not receiving back up to 1/2 of the points you missed.
The requirements are the following:
(1) Do reworks on separate sheets of paper from the test, numbered and in order.
(2) They should be correct. The point of the rework is not to find another way to make an error but rather to figure out what went wrong, how to make it right, and how to avoid making the same mistake again.
(3) Turn in the original exam without any changes. I need to be able to see what you did on the exam and how you fixed the error.
(4) Staple the original exam to the front of the pages with your reworked problems.
(4/6/2010) For Wednesday: Proportional Reasoning Handout
Hey everyone,
Here are the handouts for Wednesday:
Proportional_Reasoning.pdf
Actual_and_Relative_Change.pdf
Oh yeah, and remember today is the exam. Don't worry. It's really a lot like the practice exam problems but fewer of them. And if you need more time...not a problem. But as mentioned before no calculators on this exam. On the next one and the final you'll be able to use calculators. I'll also start using the recommended calculator in class discussions.
Lastly, please be sure you have your last homework assignment with you and any others you haven't turned in.
Cheers
Ed
(4/3/2010) How do you know which HWs you turned in??
Hey Everyone,
As mentioned in class and in the Newsfeed here, you need to have all homeworks turned in to take the exam. There are four graded homeworks plus the fifth one you should be turning in on Tuesday. So five homeworks in all.
Someone asked how we are to know which ones we turned in and which ones we didn't. I was thinking that since you went through the motion of doing the homework and placing it on my desk you would remember. But what if you didn't remember? How would you know then? With your binder you could have collected all the graded homework assignments. Say they were too heavy and you didn't want to carry them around in a binder so you threw them out. That isn't a good idea. Instructors often make exam questions based on the homework. Also you should be looking at the errors you are making so you don't make them again. Afterall, the instructor spent all this time checking and writing you little notes on how to do problems you missed. Furthmore, you see what I expect in your work when you look at the graded homeworks.
But what if you don't have your graded homework and you didn't even write down the scores so you can track your progress in the class? In that case, you should email me and ask me if there are any homeworks you haven't done. Where do you find my email address? Up at the top right of this page. Click on that link and it will try to open your mail application. You can also type edbraunh@cabrillo.edu into your favorite email application.
Cheers,
Ed
(4/3/2010) About the Exam
Hey everyone,
I've gotten some comments about the length of the exam and the need to use a calculator because of it's length. The practice problems are not the exam. The actual exam will have fewer problems. Some of the problems that you may think take a long time, don't if you use the techniques we discussed in class. For instance
if you need to factor 100000000000 into it's prime factorization
100000000000 = 1011 = (2.5)11 = 211.511
If there are other problems that you think really take a long time, I would suggest going to the MLC on Monday and asking them about the problems. You can also ask me via email and I will post the answers here.
Cheers
Ed

(2/16/2010) Welcome!
Hey everyone,
Hope you enjoy the class and find a new or rekindled interest in learning math.
Note about doing Homework: In my many years of teaching, I have never seen a student pass a math class without doing all the homework as it is assigned. You should do the homework within 24 hours of the lecture covering that material. Students who wait longer tos start the most recent homework assigned tend to take longer on their homework.
Help! is available in the MLC. That's free tutoring available 6 days a week! Click MLC Tutoring to see what tutoring is happening right now in the MLC. Note: When asking for help, don't erase your work. Show the tutor what you've done. If you can't get started on a problem ask the tutor how they know what to do. You can also show the tutor your lecture notes so they know what things they can tell you (and what they can't). Lastly, use the center regularly rather than at the last minute before a test or exam...we do drop in tutoring so while you get helped quickly, we don't stay with you for a ton of questions. Best to ask questions as they pop up.
